HIST 071 Modern Latin America, 1791 - Present
Taught as schedule allows (consult the Course Directory)
In this course, we survey the history of Latin America from the early nineteenth century to the present. Accentuating both the unity and diversity of the region, we explore such major themes as: the legacy of Iberian colonialism; state, racial and ethnic formations; democracy and dictatorship; poverty and development; and the integration of the region in the wider system of states and capital. The general approach of the course will be primarily thematic but will also feature detailed national and subnational examples.
