HIST 082 Islam in a Global Perspective

Taught as schedule allows (consult the Course Directory)

This introductory survey course covers the history of Muslim societies and polities from their inception to the present, focusing particularly on their geographical and cultural diversity, and on their transformations in the modern period. We stress three themes: the expansion of Islam in diverse, changing, cultural environments, the interaction of Islamic thought and politics with western imperialism and nationalism, and the complexity of the contemporary Muslim world. We consider issues of gender, social conflict, identity, aesthetics, and representation.
