HIST 091 Modern Japanese History

Dickinson

Taught as schedule allows (consult the Course Directory)

This course will survey the dramatic history of Japan from 1600 to the present. It has two principal aims: 1) to provide a general narrative of events 2) to introduce students to the most powerful tool of historical analysis: attention to the importance of interpretation. You will not only become acquainted with pivotal people and events. You will learn how to identify and weigh different perspectives on the past and present. Special emphasis will be given to understanding Japanese developments in global context.
