This course will examine the history of education and educational institutions in the United States from the 1600's to the present. We will look at elementary, secondary and post-secondary education, with an emphasis on higher education in the post-Civil War era. In particular, we will discuss the socio-cultural environment in which educational institutions have functioned at different points in American history, and see how policy decisions about education interact with other sociological trends.
