This course examines the political, social and cultural history of France in the late nineteenth and twentieth century. Beginning with the birth of the Third Republic, we will study the infamous Dreyfus Affair, France's war against the Germans in 1914, the crises of the interwar years and fascism, the Second World War and Vichy regime, colonialism and decolonization, Americanization and France's role in the world today. This class is a lecture class and is a continuation of History 426, but may be taken separately, and no prior knowledge of French history is assumed.
