HIST 160 Strategy, Policy and War

In depth introduction to the methods of military strategic analysis and the origins of violence using the case studies method. The course will cover issues including soccer hooliganism, the Peloponnesian War, the fall of Constantinople, the Napoleonic Wars, Wars of German Unification, World War I, the Chinese Revolution, and the Vietnam War, among others. We will also read several classic texts of Strategy including Sun Zi and Clausewitz.. Based on the famous "strategy course" at the U.S. Naval War College, where Professor Waldron taught before coming to Penn. Midterm exam, paper, and take home final.
