HIST 201 Commodities in Early Modern Europe
Muskiet
Taught as schedule allows (consult the Course Directory)
CGS Course | SEM | PRE-1800
Coffee, tea, tobacco, chocolate, and sugar are now ubiquitous in our society--but this was not always the case. This course will examine the introduction of these "new" commodities into early modern Europe's elite culture and society, from their very first mention in travel literature concerning the Far East and the "New World" to the medical discussions that they instigated, their trade and the companies that provided them to consumers in Europe. We will also study the dissemination of these commodities throughout the various strata of society during the 18th century and its consumer revolution. Discussion will also include the various historiographic trends that have been important to a study of this time period. Students will be expected to read a variety of secondary sources and primary source documents.
