Taught as schedule allows (consult the Course Directory)

SEM | PRE-1800

Exploring various works (in translation) of three major thinkers of the French Enlightenment—Voltaire, Rousseau, and Diderot—the seminar will explore both the common denominators and the debates or tensions at the heart of a movement that changed the thought and culture of a civilization. The seminar will be centered on reading and discussion, and there is a research component permitting each student to explore yet another author in comparison to these three major figures.
