HIST 202 France in the Age of Two World Wars
Taught as schedule allows (consult the Course Directory)
SEM
This seminar examines the history of France from the late nineteenth-century to the post-1945 settlement. We will explore France's participation in the Great War and the social, economic and psychological scars the war would inflict on the French nation. During the turbulent inter-war years, the fulfillment of the Versailles Treaty and the growing power of Germany would preoccupy leaders and ultimately lead to another global conflict. Special attention will be paid to France's situation in the Second World War, from the humiliating defeat in 1940 to questions of resistance, collaboration and guilt. We will focus on the Vichy Regime's National Revolution, and examine the history of French resistance, collaboration, and remembrance of the occupation.
