This course examines the causes and global consequences of the French Revolution. During the first half of the course, students will discuss the transformation of France's monarchy in the years leading up to 1789, the long-term and immediate origins of the revolution that erupted that same year, and the rise of terror as a political ideology after 1793 During the semester's second half, students will research the impact of the French Revolution on revolutionary movements in the Caribbean, the early United States, and continental Europe, as well as on the evolution of political thought.
