HIST 203 Creation of the Constitution
Taught as schedule allows (consult the Course Directory)
R | SEM | PRE-1800
This course will focus on the four month period from May 14—September 17, 1787, during which 55 delegates gathered in Philadelphia to create a new constitution for the newly independent American states. Although much of the reading and research in the course will focus on that rather narrow time period, we will, as preparation for our intensive look at the Constitutional Convention, also be reading some of the principal secondary works on the subject of the American Revolution and Constitution. This will, most emphatically, be a RESEARCH seminar, in which each student will be expected to write a substantial term paper based on primary sources. In addition to our weekly seminar meetings, Professor Beeman expects to meet frequently with each student to help guide her/him in the selection of a topic and the subsequent research and writing around that topic.
