Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and all those other things that tourists do before they ride the Ducks: We know that Philadelphia was at the center of the American Revolution. But what did the revolution mean to the varied people—rich and poor, black and white, male and female—who lived in the largest city in British North America? This seminar will study the experiences of Philadelphians during a period of tremendous political and social upheaval The first half of the semester will concentrate on readings on major themes and the identification of topics of individual research projects, which will be the focus of the second half of the course.
