HIST 203 Franklin's Philadelphia
Roney
Taught as schedule allows (consult the Course Directory)
R |SEM | PRE-1800
This research seminar explores the objectives, techniques, and mechanics of historical research and writing through the rich treasure trove of Philadelphia-area archives. Focusing on Philadelphia in the age of Benjamin Franklin, students will craft a research question and then use primary and secondary texts to formulate a persuasive argument that 1) answers their question, and 2) explains the importance of their research in a larger context. By the end of the semester students can expect to be familiar with the archival resources of Philadelphia and the different steps of historical work, from compiling a bibliography, to analyzing and organizing evidence, to composing and revising historical writing.
