This seminar will explore the practices and representation of New World colonization, plantation, Native contact and change, and the transferal of European society and culture by examining such diverse evidence as maps, literatures of colonization, novels, material culture, and sermons. Through this material, we will also interrogate the meanings of the key terms in the course's title: "Early," "American," "Cultural," and "History." Requirements for the course include active discussion, critical reading, a mid-term, and a seminar paper.
