This seminar will explore 20th-century American history through a focus upon five major areas in mass entertainment: professional sports, motion pictures, radio, music, and television. Through readings, videos, and discussion, we will consider how each of these entities has both shaped and been shaped by critical developments of modern American history. Particular emphasis will be placed on studying entertainment's influence on race, gender and youth culture. Requirements will include active participation in the seminar, a short paper, and a longer research paper.
