This course will examine the evolution of Catholic identity in the United States from colonial times to the present through a review of key historical developments and the careers of notable Catholics in American public life. Topics will include the virulent anti-Catholicism of the nineteenth century in politics and literature; Catholics and slavery; Catholic separatism and the Catholic Schools Movement; Catholic social teachings and activists in American labor and politics; the post-World War II resurgence of anti-Catholicism; Supreme Court decisions on aid to parochial schools; the careers of Senator Joseph McCarthy and William F. Buckley; the impact of their faith on Catholic politicians and Supreme Court Justices; the decisive role of the Catholic voter in recent presidential elections; Catholics in the arts and media, including Flamnnery O'Connor, Thomas Merton, and Bruce Springsteen; the abortion controversy; the priest abuse crisis; and divisions and diversity today in American Catholicism.
