Taught as schedule allows (consult the Course Directory)
R | SEM | CGS Course | Counts as distributional course in History & Tradition for CGS only.
This course surveys the dramatic changes in American Indian life during the twentieth century with a regional emphasis on the American Southwest. The course will study the impact of key political, legal, economic, and cultural issues that continue to challenge individual identities and tribal sovereignty. Topics will include pivotal events such as Indian citizenship acts, Depression-era reforms, arts and crafts revivals, the pan-Indian movement, the repatriation of human remains and sacred objects, and intellectual property rights. With the emergence of casinos, tribal colleges, cultural centers, and Native American Studies programs, it was a century of nation-building that transformed reservation communities and empowered American Indians in a postcolonial society.
