Major Seminars

History 201-206 seminars are open to history majors only during pre-registration. If the course does not reach its enrollment maximum, it will be open to all students beginning with drop/add on a first-come first-serve basis.

HIST 204 Politics of Slaves and Freedpeople

Taught as schedule allows (consult the Course Directory)

This seminar will explore how slaves and freedpeople practiced politics both before and after some of them won the right to vote, and thus, how they influenced political life at the local and national levels. We will effectively challenge the idea that "politics" and political activity only relate to the electoral arena, or that political participation only involves those who can exercise the franchise. To do so, we will read and discuss both primary and secondary sources, and students will have the opportunity to do some original research.
