HIST 204 U.S. Civil War
Taught as schedule allows (consult the Course Directory)
SEM
Few events in American, or for that matter, modern western, history have the significance of the Civil War and few left a better cache of records for historians seeking to understand its signal events, contingencies, actors. This seminar combines common readings on the American Civil War and a guided research experience on a topic of the students' own choice. The course pursues a parallel process of reading and analyzing primary sources and of research and writing individual papers. Students will pick topics in consultation with the professor, will write a paper proposal, draw up a bibliography of primary and secondary sources, and will proceed to research and write the paper under the guidance of the professor and with feedback from their peers. Reading will be comparatively light to allow for significant research and writing. All writing is for peer review. The paper will fulfill department research requirements.
