HIST 204 Religion and Politics in the Media
Taught as schedule allows (consult the Course Directory)
SEM
This course explores the historical relationship between religion, politics, and the mass media in the twentieth century, and its implications for contemporary issues. Various moments and media forms will be covered, including print, radio, television, film, and the internet. Religion is a topic that historically has received relatively little press attention for fear of generating controversy or offending believers. Key moments and debates have required the abandonment of that caution, including the Scopes trial and the civil rights and anti-abortion movements and many others. The class will be organized around a series of case studies of moments like those, including a few from the 21st century.
