How did the Middle East and the Balkans become centers of crisis and trouble for the past century? This course explores a problem that sparked Great Power crises and armed conflict not only before the First World War, but also in the turbulent century that followed. Originally defined as resolving the fate of the moribund Ottoman Empire, the
"Eastern Question" by the time of WWI referred to the ways world powers would relate to the Empire's successor states and peoples. From Bosnia to Baghdad, this problem remains a challenge.
Major themes in this course include imperialism; nationalism; pan-Islam; modernization; the relationship between domestic politics, socioeconomic problems and foreign policy; internationalism; the transnational movement of ideas; the causes of war; the Balance of Power; the Concert of Europe; and geopolitical strategy.
