This seminar examines the dynamic and turbulent development of the economies of China , Hong Kong, Japan, the Koreas, and Taiwan from the late nineteenth century down to the present. Special attention will be paid to the rise and transformation of banking institutions, capital markets, business structures, government institutions designed to guide the economy, labor organizations, integration into the global trade system, and differing ideological visions of development. Prior coursework on East Asia is useful but not essential.
