HIST 214 Immigrants, African Americans, and Cities in Twentieth-Century America

Katz

Taught as schedule allows (consult the Course Directory)

SEM | Permit May Be Required: See above

This seminar explores the links between race and immigration in American cities. Readings focus on both case studies—building racial ghettos, the confrontation of "new immigrants" with America, Mexican and Chinese immigrants in California cities—and major interpretive issues, such as panethnicity, assimilation, and multiculturalism. Seminar sessions will be divided between discussions of readings (approximately one book per week) and analysis of primary sources. Students will be expected to lead one or two workshops on primary sources related to the seminar's concerns.
