HIST 610 U.S. Civil War & Reconstruction
Taught as schedule allows (consult the Course Directory)
The literature on the U.S. Civil War and Reconstruction is enormous and wildly variegated in content and quality. The task of teaching this subject can be daunting, but also great fun. This seminar is designed to address both these realities. It is primarily designed to give graduate students command of the "narrative" of causation, conduct, and consequences of the U.S. Civil War. Secondarily it is meant to familiarize students with the historiography of the subject so that they can pursue further study on their own. Weekly discussion will be shaped around common readings along with two or three reports on major works or historical disputes. The required final project will be geared toward the product most appropriate to a student's needs.
1. A detailed research proposal for a paper on some aspect of the subject for students who wish to do further study in the field. or
2. A bibliographical essay built around selected themes and designed to assist in preparation for the general exam and future teaching.
