HIST 610 Topics in Southern History

This seminar will examine important topics in southern history from the early nineteenth century to the present. We will read and discuss an important work in common each week. In addition, there will be student reports on additional books of their own choosing. The common reading will survey major works by Eugene Genovese, Walter Johnson, Bert Wyatt-Brown, Stephanie McCurry, C. Vann Woodward, Steven Hahn, Bruce Palmer, Glenda Gilmore, Patricia Sullivan, Barbara Ransby, David Chappell, and Dan Carter. The objective is to develop a thorough understanding of the major themes of southern history by exploring the contemporary frontiers of research. his seminar will examine important topics in southern history from the early nineteenth century to the present. We will read and discuss an important work in common each week. In addition, there will be student reports on additional books of their own choosing.
