HIST 620 The Atlantic Community—Past, Present, and Future?
Taught as schedule allows (consult the Course Directory)
CGS Course
Contemporary disagreements between the United States and its European allies have inspired much pessimism about the state of the Atlantic Community, a term popularized during the Cold War to suggest that the alliance between North America and Western Europe went deeper than political convenience. This course will go beyond the headlines to look at the concept of the Atlantic Community in both theory and practice during the modern era. It will discuss not only the political/strategic relationship between Europe and North America, but also the influence of economic and cultural exchanges on the relationship. Beginning with a brief discussion of the imperial networks of the Early Modern Atlantic world, the course will focus on the 19th and 20th Centuries, placing current disputes in a broader historical context and considering how if at all the Atlantic Community represents a coherent space within a globalizing world.
