HIST 620 Early Modern British History
Taught as schedule allows (consult the Course Directory)
This course is designed to prepare students for primary research in the history, literature, law and religion of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland by surveying key secondary literature in the political, religious, social and cultural history of the British Isles from about 1480 to the 1707 Act of Union. Students will read recent and a few older classic works and write short critical review essays, with attention to both history and historiography. Reading assignments can be individualized to meet the needs of students in other disciplines than history, and to address students' particular research interests. Some attention will be given to the British Atlantic in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The proseminar serves as a prerequisite for the spring Research Seminar in Early Modern British History.
