HIST 650 Religious Encounters in African History

Babou

Taught as schedule allows (consult the Course Directory)

This seminar is designed to provide an understanding of the rich history of interactions between followers of African Traditional Religions (ATRs) and the world religions of Islam and Christianity on the continent of Africa. We pay particular attention to the religious traditions Africans brought to the encounter with Islam and Christianity and the new meanings they infused into them. Reading materials will be drawn from the writings of historians, anthropologists, sociologists, and specialists in religious studies.
