Description: 
This course gives snapshots of U.S. “expansionism” and “imperialism” in the American West and the Pacific from the mid-19th century through World War I. We also examine how an expanding America encountered the nations of East Asia, the Philippines and Hawaii in the context of geopolitics of the time. Race, religion, trade, and culture are among the major themes of discussion in this class.
