HIST650 - TOPICS IN AFRICAN HIST: TEACHING AFRICAN HISTORY

Description:
This seminar revisits some of the long-standing debates in the historiography of Africa, from the nature of African slavery and of African participation in the slave trade, to issues of colonial hegemony and the 'invention of tradition', to debates over the roots of 'tribalism', underdevelopment, authoritarianism, corruption, etc. We will compare four generations of scholarship on these and other topics, looking at how sources, methods, and conceptual approaches have changed (or not!) Familiarity with basics of African history is essential.
