Disstertation Topic

My dissertation focuses on the relationship between politics and aesthetics in periodicals produced in Restoration era France (1815-1830).  In particular, it examines these periodicals as loci for the contestation and development of Romanticism as a political and aesthetic movement in France.  It focuses on the intermingling of the aesthetic debate between Romanticism and Classicism with the political debate between royalists and liberals, in a time period where Romanticism was becoming increasingly liberal as it became increasingly defined as a movement.  In doing so it hopes to speak to larger issues about the character of political and cultural engagement in the press, and in the public sphere more generally defined.
