Personal Statement

My interests lie primarily in queer history, African American history and the intersections between black power, queer and gender liberationist movements of the late 1960s and early 1970s. I also am interested in the ways in which radical queer, gender-non-conforming and trans people of color resisted the state repression that characterized the assault against the black liberation movement of the 1970s and the malign neglect that defined the Reagan's administration near non-responsiveness to the AIDS epidemic of the late 1980s. Without minimalizing the traumatic intensity of what Ann Cvetkovich terms the "loss of history and the history of loss," I hope to highlight the fierce and imaginative ways that black queer, gender-non-conforming and trans people have responded to both.
