Miguel Durango

Ph.D. Candidate

I am a Ph.D. candidate working on the Caribbean during the Age of Revolutions. My dissertation project focuses on the history of Black and Indigenous communities in the Guajira Peninsula, situated in the borderlands of Contemporary Colombia and Venezuela. I am investigating their participation in trade and migration networks within the Caribbean.

My research is being supported by fellowships from the Jhon Carter Brown Library, the Nederlandse Taalunie (Union for the Dutch Language), the Casa de Velázquez (Écoles françaises à l’étranger, École des Hautes études hispaniques et ibériques), the Center for Latin American and LatinX Studies (CLALS) at the University of Pennsylvania, and the Penn’s School of Arts and Sciences (SAS).

I have presented my work at the Latin American Jewish Studies Association (LAJSA), the University of Exeter, the Latin American Studies Association (LASA), the University of Pennsylvania, Seton Hall University, and the Banco de la República de Colombia.

Before my time at Penn, I earned an M.A. in history and a B.A. in anthropology from the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia. I also worked as a researcher on Human Rights within the Colombian legal system.

Dissertation Committee: Marcy Norton, Roquinaldo Ferreira, and Ann Farnsworth-Alvear.
