Ann Moyer (UPenn), author of The Intellectual World of Sixteenth-Century Florence: Humanists and Culture in the Age of Cosimo I (2020), in conversation with Eva Del Soldato (UPenn)

Ann Moyer (UPenn), Associate Professor of History, and Co-Executive Editor, Journal of the History of Ideas.  Prof. Moyer specializes in the intellectual and cultural history of Renaissance Europe, especially sixteenth-century Italy. Her most recent book is The Intellectual World of Sixteenth-Century Florence: Humanists and Culture in the Age of Cosimo I (2020). It examines how Florentines studied their own language, literature, history, and art and argued that it merited comparison with the greatness of antiquity. Moyer's previous work includes a cluster of three related book-length research projects with overlapping themes related to music, mathematics, and the relationship between the arts and the sciences in Renaissance Europe.  

 

Eva Del Soldato (UPenn), is Associate Professor of Romance Languages, and Graduate Chair, ItalianProf. Del Soldato was trained in Philosophy and Intellectual History at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. Her research is primarily devoted to Renaissance thought and culture, with a special attention to the Aristotelian and Platonic traditions. She also cultivates interests in history of book, history of libraries and universities, and in Twentieth-century cultural institutions. Her monograph, Early Modern Aristotle. On the Making and Unmaking of Authority (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2020), is devoted to the strategic uses of Aristotle (and Plato) as authorities in the early modern period.
