Annenberg Seminar in History (Virtual)

Penn and Slavery Project
| Virtual-Link - https://upenn.zoom.us/j/93334448121

The augmented reality (AR) tour of Penn’s campus is the first of its kind among peer institutions that are investigating their historic ties to slavery. The AR app takes users on a tour of slavery's legacy at Penn in six stops, each telling a story through an AR experience. The app was created by an interdisciplinary team of historians, librarians, developers, and designers.

Instead of reading a pre-circulated paper, we encourage you to experience the AR app before the seminar.

You can download the app for free at the Apple Store (for iphone, iOS) - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/penn-slavery/id1551814600

Our Annenberg seminar presentation will provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the app's creation. Student researchers, app team members, and a representative from the app's developer, Dream Syndicate, will share their insights into the challenges and rewards of creating an AR experience based on historical research. In the open discussion that follows, attendees will have the opportunity to share their own experiences of the app and brainstorm with us about the possibilities of AR technology for generating robust public conversations about difficult histories.
